First thing I would like to say is, "Hello to you all from Washington State, USA." I am posting here hoping to find out some info on a motorcycle frame I have. I saw a thread in a VMX forum that was posted by a one of your locals last January and hoping he may be able to help me out. Basically what I have is a knock off 74 MX chromoly frame. With a couple of differences, like no markings and a different swing arm. I have pic's of it on the web that you can look at. I had to replace the rear motor cradle, made it exactly like the original with 1 modification. I'm stuffing a MX360 motor in it soon. I appreciated any info you may have for me on this frame, I've been looking off and on for 3 months trying to find out who made it. HEy dave, marshy here AKA Freakshow, im thinking you mean me who posts on that forum. The rear frame loop etc is very Yamaha and so are its mounts, but its not a yamaha frame as you say, could be set up for a 76 YZ 250 or larger style motor but im guessing its a TT frame so possibly sc500 or SR/TT/XT if it would fit . The rear engine shoe is a bit strange, if that's original its very Flat track. But i can tell you who its not, NOT BOSS, trackmaster, Redline,C&J, Starracer,champion, hindall, cheney etc - the tubing and workmanship isnt right for any of them. that rear profab style swing arm is definatly set up and reinforced like a later model bike so its certainly an MX frame, but very badly made. the strange part is why they would use the Dzus fastners on the Rear down tubes for number plates, if it was a real MX racer it would have had threads or clips, the Dzus were like you say MX250 /360/500 stuff so it might just be a knock off of that model. Then again why all that trouble for at best an average frame geometry??? after a few test maybe they realised how heavy the MX was and the YZ style was going to be the seller and never took it serouisly to production numbers. It actually looks like its unfinished, incomplete or simply from a test jig, the welds are terrible so its not a commercial finish, maybe the apprentice did it or it was a test run, its just not up to speed in a few areas like the trackmaster, champion TIG welds of the time. the tube splices are also a bit rough as is the gusset area. Question would be then is it all chrome moly, or is it actually Chromo for sure ? it has rust from what i can see , so it might not be 4130, unless its that taiwan Chromo that doug shcwerma was using around that time, but then again its not a champion style nor is the swingarm. Im just trying to think who else was using that grade of steel back then. More than likely and early copy by profab or similar welder of a standard MX frame with there style of gusseting. Still looks unfinished or test based, those rear axles plates look like they were cut with a hacksaw there prity rough. anyway all that aside What do you plan to do with it ? im always looking for new frame projects  |
